North Coast Angler Fishing Report

May 23, 2005

I fished most of the weekend on the Merrimack. I started at dawn and fished into the afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday. What can you say about this weather? I could think of many appropriate adjectives but this is a family website.

That being said, I started at near low water on both mornings in Joppa flats and found fish in 3 to 5 feet of water. The fishing was steady with a mix of fish in three basic year class sizes-24 to 26, 18 to 22 and 10 to 12 inches. This is a good sign. My guest and I managed to take 2 keepers around 29 to 30 inches. With the tide rising, the fish moved up river and we followed. We hooked fish everywhere we fished, from Carr Island to Deer Island. When the tide turned to go out, we observed hundreds of fish on the surface feeding on small 1/4 to 1/2 inch grass shrimp. We took all our fish on a olive /white/peacock hurl type streamer tied on 3/0 hooks: we changed lines to accommodate various drifts and water depths. Saturday afternoon we fished up river for shad and boated many big hens up to 9 lbs. So many fish in so many areas!!!! Bottom line is that the bass are here and you can find them all the time at a given area in the water shed. The shad fishing is peaking right now. Drop us a line if you have any specific questions. Enjoy!
