| Last week we were stuck with “pea soup” fog all week, this week has brought the worst weather in recent memory, strong NE wind, heavy surf and cool temps. Needless to say, we did not get out on the water much at all. Captain Al Montello fished the Merrimack estuary last weekend and reported catching and releasing lots of school sized stripers, 16-25”. He also learned that larger stripers were being caught fishing the darkness with live eel’s.
Can’t say whether the fish are still in the river but chances are the fish have been blown out by the river flood run off.
I did break out my long stick, poppers and fished the Cape Ann rocks and beaches a few times this week with good success. Good numbers of stripers can be found along the shore and many anglers I observed were enjoying the action. This “bite” should continue for a week or so, maybe longer. I have heard on reliable source that Mackerel are showing in Gloucester harbor and this should keep the stripers here for awhile. Captain Allan Smith has returned to Costa Rica for the coming seasons and we will be getting some interesting stories back from him in the near future. Captain Al Montello and I will be heading to western N.Y. this w/e for some salmon, steelhead and brown trout action. We hope to have a good story to share with all of you in a week or so…..Stay tuned!
