Fishing Reports
August 25, 2008

This past week fished much like last week a few OK days with a few slow ones mixed in. The overall summer pattern is beginning to show definite sign of moving into an early fall pattern. The large bluefish have made their way to the shorelines and outside at Flat Ground. The fall run baitfish are also showing in increasing number and variety. Gloucester Harbor contains a good supply of herring and pogies. We are also seeing silver sides and pods of pogies along the shoreline from Andrews point on down to Dog Bar. I have yet to see any peanut bunker shore-wise and when they do show, that will signal the beginning of the fall fishing pattern.

The schoolie stripers are now podding up and displaying that “slurping” behavior as they feed at the surface on small crustaceans. I have noted sizable groups from the back shore and up to Straitsmouth. When they get on that small stuff, it becomes difficult to get them interested in anything else. We have had some success throwing small soft plastics and toad flies at them. The shore fishing has been slow for stripers but good for blues. Steve P fished most all mornings last week with a few stripers in the 20 to 28 inch range and bluefish up to 12 pounds.

The tuna bite is going well at the N/W corner of Stellwagon. Bart Waldo and Capt Allan Smith wrestled two to the boat on Saturday, tagging and releasing one of them (Tag a Tiny weekend) and keeping one to feed all their friends! The tuna were 150 pounds and fell for a Daisy chain tipped green machine and a rigged Slug-go chain.

Martin and Micheal (aka The Bald Barrister and Mike the Snap) enjoyed a good day chasing down slupers and a few bluefish.

Father and son team, Bill and Cole enjoyed a super morning landing several good stripers on tube and with white Slug-Go's.
