2006 Fishing Reports

Cape Ann report
The striper and bluefish fishing continues to be very good. Large schools of bluefish can be found herding the peanut bunker from Halibut Point on down the coast to Dog Bar at Gloucester harbor. The stripers can be found in the mix as well, especially along the area beaches. The late summer fishing is currently better than usual and may be an indicator of a great start to the fall fishing. Most all the stripers that we landied appeared healthy and plump (from the P-B feast). I have begun to hear reports of larger fish beginning to show up as well. The commercial striper harvest ended last Friday and by accounts, most of the stripers were harvested in the areas to south of Cape Ann.

As for football tuna, the action continues to happen well off Cape Ann waters to the south at Stellwagon. Captain Allan Smith reports hooking a few smaller fish on trolling gear. The catch bag limit and keeper size regulations are now 27 inches at one fish per day per boat and two 47 to 73 inch fish per day per boat. This current regulation is in affect only until September 14th and then returns to the previous regulations. However, check the National Fisheries web site for updates (see our link on the home page). I continue to be optimistic that the footballs will make their way up to our area over the next few weeks.

Captain Al Montello reports seeing large schools of stripers and bluefish off the beach front at Plum Island and in the rivers mouth.

Last Wednesday morning I had the pleasure of fishing with three excellent light tackle anglers; Magnus and his two sons Eric and Nick. Nick and Eric hammered the stripers with top water hard baits while their Dad enjoyed the action on the fly rod. All in all, they landed upward of 30 stripers with a few bluefish cut-offs. I look forward too fishing with these guys again!

I also had my grandson, Joey out for some casting and catching lessons on Saturday morning and here displayed are the results of his efforts. Well done Joey!
