The fishing over the past week has continued to be excellent for both stripers and bluefish. It is clear that the fall blitz is underway on the north coast. Large schools of stripers and bluefish have been reported from S.Maine on down the coast to Boston harbor. The schools of fish are feasting on acres of immature peanut bunker. Other baitfish, such as mackerel and menhaden are also beginning to show. How long the stripers and blues hang around depends on many factors; water temps, baitfish movement, wind direction and others to mention a few.
As for football tuna, they are being caught in good numbers at middle bank on Stellwagon. Reports from Captain Allan Smith last week were excellent. As for our near coastal Cape Ann waters, the tuna have been scarce with just a few lucky anglers finding fish and hooking up.
With the hurricane offshore and the resulting high surf and large ocean swells, our boats will be tied up at the dock for a good part of this week. This might be a good time to break out the long rod and fish the many good shore locations around the Cape…..but be extremely careful of large breaking waves if you venture out onto the rocks or along the beach front.
