The striper and bluefish action picked up a bit this past week as the water temps dropped some 4 degrees from last week. I found consistent action throughout most of last week with a solid mixed bag of “cookie cutter bass” and bluefish to 12 pounds each day out. The stripers and blues are feeding on small baitfish that I have not been able to positively ID (see photo). The baitfish are super tiny, maybe 1 inch in length. If you can ID them, please send me an email. Steve P again fished most everyday for a few hours at first and last light and found blues and bass most very day. Saturday morning was best with fishing buddy Robbie R landing two good sized stripers of 35 and 40 inches. So it is beginning to look a lot like the fall pattern is again showing good signs of picking up. The predicted cooler weather coming for next week and the mysterious baitfish should get the bass and blues into an even more aggressive feeding pattern, so look for the coastwise fishing to improve next week.

Last Thursday, Capt Allan Smith and I got to enjoy a great day together fishing Bluefin out at Stellwagon. Allan’s super skills and knowledge got us on the fish consistently, hooking up 6 big Charlie McT’s in less than 5 hours. Together we managed to bring 3 fish of 55 to 60 inches to the boat, releasing two, and keeping one to share with our ever increasing circle of friends! You can see from the photo on the left the sheer toughness of these truly amazing fish; I had all I could handle (with a 30 class outfit) getting one of these beasts to the boat in 20 minutes. The tuna angling at Stellwagon continues to be great and we hope that the bite will eventually move somewhat closer to Cape Ann waters as we get further into fall.
